第七十八章   承辱称王

天下莫柔弱于水，而攻坚强者莫之能胜，以其无以易之。 弱之胜强，柔之胜刚，天下莫不知，莫能行。 是以圣人云：受国之垢，是谓社稷主；受国不祥，是为天下王。正言若反。

Taking Disagrace to be the Leader

Nothingis the world

isas yielding and receptive as water,

Yetfor dissolving the hard and inflexible,

nothingcan surpass it.

The weak overcomes the strong; the soft overcomes the hard.Everyone knows this, but no one puts it into practice.

Thesoft overcomes the hard,

thegentle overcomes the rigid.

Nonein the world do not know this,

butfew can put this into practice.

ThereforeEnlightened Individuals say:

普天下没有什么东西比水更柔弱了，而其穿透力却没有什么能胜过它，没有什么东西是可以代替水的。柔胜刚，弱胜强，这个道理天下无人不知，但却没有人真正去实施。

所以古人说：能承担国家之屈辱，才配担当治国之重任；承担全国的灾难，才称得上国家的君王。依天道无比正确的话语，在世俗中听起来如反话一样。
